General Information

In the last years, I have accumulated experience assisting business schools, universities and multinational companies in designing and implementing strategic and institutional change.

 

My research concentrates on the intersections among global strategic management, international business, corporate governance and boards of directors. I am currently working on three research initiatives: (i) Boards of directors’ effectiveness in strategic monitoring: An integrative model of antecedents; (ii) Explicating the limited complementarity between drivers of the absorptive capacity of multinational corporations; and (iii) Boards of directors’ knowledge and learning capabilities, international strategy involvement and international performance. A summary of these initiatives is included in the document “Research and teaching philosophy and projects”, attached to this application. My current scientific production includes seven articles in refereed journals (two ABDC rated – B and C; three Scopus indexed – Q2, Q3 and Q4), 18 articles in conference proceedings with scientific refereeing and three working papers (of which one is under review by a JCR-ranked journal).

 

I also launched and coordinated the international research project “Ranking de Internacionalização das Empresas Portuguesas”, a systematic ranking of multinationals conducted by research teams based in Portugal and Brazil. In addition, I accumulated experience with international knowledge and research centres by serving at the Sustainability Knowledge Lab of INDEG-ISCTE (as co-Director) and the Center for International Studies and the Business Research Unit of ISCTE (as Researcher).

 

My philosophy of teaching is grounded on experiential learning. I mostly do so by inducing preparation activities (research projects, case studies) followed by critical debate, reflection and synthesis, in class or in writing. My teaching experience includes 40+ courses at doctoral, masters, undergraduate and executive education levels, delivered at ISCTE – University Institute of Lisbon, University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, Fundação Dom Cabral (Brazil), Fundação Getúlio Vargas (Brazil) and ENAM (Mozambique), with an average teaching evaluation of 4,58 (on a 1-5 scale) and straight-excellent annual evaluations (ISCTE; 2015 to 2019). From 2013 to 2019, I have served at INDEG-ISCTE Executive Education with ascending responsibilities up to Board Member, Member of the Executive Commission and  Director-General of Programs. My responsibilities included overseeing open-enrolment and corporate programs, faculty management (150 scholars), innovation and international partnerships. I was responsible for articulating the formulation and implementation of the School’s strategic plan and for coordinating the related knowledge and information processes. In my tenure, I created and managed the Corporate business unit of INDEG-ISCTE, currently established as a provider of customized organizational development projects and programs to major organizations in Portugal and abroad. I also advanced successful international partnership initiatives with Fundação Dom Cabral (Brazil), Fundação Getúlio Vargas (Brazil) and Escola de Negócios e Administração de Moçambique.

 

In addition, I participated extensively in the processes of applications and audits by the main international academic accreditation and ranking bodies (AACSB, AMBA and Financial Times). I have also served in the organising and scientific commissions of international academic conferences, including the 2019 European Academy of Management (EURAM) Conference in Lisbon (as member of the organising commission in charge of finance and administration).

 

Before entering academia, I worked for 20 years as an executive and consultant, in 15 countries. My experience includes Xerox Corporation, Booz Allen & Hamilton, Go To Market Consultoria and the Brazilian Navy in international assignments in finance, audit, sales, marketing and general management up to CEO and Corporate Director responsibilities. As a consultant and auditor, I led engagements for corporations, SMEs, institutional investors, private equity firms and policymaking organizations in various international settings. I am also a Certified Board Director by experience (IBGC-Brazil).

 

I hold a DSc/PhD in Business Administration (Strategic Management and Corporate Governance) from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (QS World University Ranking 2020 #601-650), an MScBA from Rio de Janeiro Federal University (QS World University Ranking 2020 #358), a BSc in Economics from Rio de Janeiro State University (QS World University Ranking 2020 #801-1000) and have graduated from advanced management programs at The Wharton School and IMD.
