Hanan Mahmoud

General Information

My work as an academic staff at an Egyptian governmental institute includes medical
education, scientific research and laboratory services for the community. As a start
for my academic career, I have chosen infectious diseases with special interest in
Parasitic diseases, since parasitic diseases are among major public health concerns in
Egypt. In part, my work includes cooperation with other staff members from the
Public Health, tropical medicine and Clinical microbiology sectors for studying risk
factors involved in prevalence of Infectious diseases and planning prevention
strategies for their diagnosis and elimination. Infectious diseases especially those of
parasitic origin, place an unacceptable and disproportionate economic and social
burden on low and middle income countries. During my MD, I started to work on the
molecular epidemiology of Giardia duodenalis, at Robert Koch institute in Germany,
where I have obtained foundation level of understanding in molecular techniques
and introductory knowledge in bioinformatics and became very passionate to
continue within this field. My enthusiasm to build a better career and improve my
competences within the field of Public health has encouraged me to obtain a
professional diploma in Clinical nutrition from the National nutrition institute.
Clinical nutrition is a rapidly emerging field and has various links with infection and
immunity. Likewise, microbiome correlated clinical outcomes and wash, sanitation
and hygiene (WASH) interventions for neglected tropical diseases control and
diarrheal diseases reduction. As the wind of change is blowing across the globe; big
Data usage, mobile health approaches and cutting-edge quantitative methods offer
hope for disrupting traditional health systems and improving health worldwide, as
applying these new innovations could transform infectious disease surveillance and
elimination. Future technologies overview and their potential application; crosscutting themes of pathogen detection and characterization; data application for
interventions improvement, genomic data analysis using publically available
software tools to identify causative pathogens and outbreak tracking are
revolutionizing the routine identification and characterization of pathogens, opening
new chances and challenges from fundamental research to clinical diagnostics.
Moreover, how integrating multiple omics approaches using bioinformatics could
revolutionize medical field has made me enthusiastic about how such new insights
would be translated within the context of precision public health.
