General Information

I would like to apply for the position of English for Academic Purposes Tutor at Liwa College of Technology. Through this statement I would like to demonstrate why I would be an asset to Liwa College of Technology due to my vast experience in working with university students in developing their academic skills.

I am a highly qualified teacher, with a Masters Degree in English and DELTA. Moreover, I have considerable experience working abroad, as I have taught in five countries: Poland, China, the UK, Spain and the UAE.

In China, I first worked for an EF school, where I taught mostly primary school students and participated in training sessions aimed at developing YL teaching skills. Then, I worked for the Ningbo Institute of Technology (NIT). I taught mainly for a joint program of NIT and the University of Indianapolis. I prepared freshmen and sophomores to either finish their undergraduate studies in the USA, or to take instruction from University of Indianapolis’s professors at NIT. I also taught Spanish and a course on European Culture. From my experience of teaching Chinese students, I learnt a lot about adjusting teaching methods to individual learners’ needs and on teaching English for Academic Purposes. I was responsible for creating my own curriculum, devising course materials and exams, setting learning targets and assessing the students.

At the University of Bristol, UK, I gained experience in working for a British Higher Education institution. I was a tutor of English for Academic Purposes at a pre-sessional course for international students for four summers from 2016 to 2019, each course lasting for six weeks. I was expected to work with university criteria, adhere to their standards and take part in marking and marking moderation processes. Developing students’ critical thinking and ability to conduct research autonomously were crucial, deciding students’ admission to postgraduate courses. Tutors were also required to attend PD sessions on giving feedback, encouraging students’ autonomy and developing critical thinking.

My experience at the International House in San Sebastian helped me develop further in terms of teaching young learners. I was expected to follow the IH standards of teaching and assessment. Moreover, I was able to complete my Delta course during this period, which gave me further insight into the current research related to teaching English for Academic Purposes.

I have been working for the Ministry of Education in the UAE since January 2019. I have taught English Language and Business at a secondary level. I have come to see how important learning English is for the students planning to pursue their university career in English and I have gained considerable experience working with Emirati secondary school students and preparing them for their academic future.

In July 2020, I was shortlisted for the position of an Assessment Specialist in the Ministry of Education Cycle 1 English Team and subsequently given an interview. I have been working with the English Assessment Unit, now in Emirates Schools Establishment, part-time since March 2021. I have been mostly authoring assessments, mainly Grade 4 ones, for which I am responsible, as well as revising the work of others. It has been very challenging to both teach full-time and create assessment, but very rewarding at the same time. I enjoy working with my team and the challenge that the assessment work brings.

Yours sincerely,

Julia Krasny
